What happens when your sticker expires
A Massachusetts inspection sticker is valid through the last day of the month printed on it. On the first day of the following month it is expired, and there is no grace period. Police can stop you for it, and the fine for operating a vehicle with an expired sticker starts at $50.
The ticket is the visible cost. The quieter one is that an expired sticker gives an officer a reason to stop you at all, and it can complicate an insurance claim if you are in a crash while out of compliance.
Expired sticker or rejection sticker
These are two different problems and people mix them up.
- Expired. You simply did not get the car inspected in time. Book a test, pay the $35, and you are current again.
- Rejected. The car was inspected and failed. You have a rejection sticker, a list of what failed, and a limited window to repair and return for a free re-inspection at the same station within 60 days.

Can you sell a car with an expired sticker?
Yes. A private sale in Massachusetts does not require a valid inspection sticker. Ownership moves on the certificate of title, and the buyer gets their own seven day window to inspect the car once they have registered it.
What changes is the negotiation. A buyer looking at an expired or rejected sticker has to price in repairs they cannot see yet, and most of them either discount heavily or move on to the next listing. Sellers in that position often find the private market slower and the offers lower than the car deserves.
Your realistic options
- Inspect it and sell normally. Best if you expect it to pass. A current sticker removes the buyer’s main objection.
- Repair, re-inspect, then sell. Worth it when the failure is small and cheap. Not worth it when the repair costs more than the value it adds.

An expired inspection sticker and an expired registration are separate things, and it is possible to have one without the other.
