How much is my car worth?

The honest answer is that your car has three different values at the same time, and most of the frustration people feel when selling comes from comparing one to another. There is what a private buyer would pay, what a dealership would allow on a trade, and what a direct buyer will hand you for the car on its own. Those numbers are rarely the same, and none of them is the number you see on a valuation website.

Online estimators are useful for orientation and nothing more. They work from year, mileage, and trim, then apply regional averages. They cannot see the service records, the tires, the rust underneath, or the fact that the car sat for two winters. That is why an estimate and a real written offer often disagree, and why the offer is the only figure you can actually act on.

What genuinely moves the number

In rough order of impact, these are the things that decide what a car is worth in New England:

  • Condition, inside and out. This outweighs almost everything else. A well-kept car with ordinary mileage beats a neglected one with low mileage nearly every time.
  • Documented maintenance. Receipts and a service history turn claims into facts. If you have them, gather them before you ask anyone for a number.
  • Accident and title history. A clean history report supports the value. Prior damage does not disqualify a car, but it has to be known up front rather than discovered later.
  • Underbody condition. This is the New England factor. Road salt and coastal air work on the wheel wells, brake lines, and seals for years before the paint shows anything.
  • Mileage, in context. Highway miles are gentler than the same number of stop-and-go city miles. A blanket deduction for the odometer alone is lazy pricing.
  • Demand for that specific vehicle. All-wheel drive holds interest here in a way it does not in milder parts of the country.

What matters less than people expect

Sellers often over-weight a few things. A recent set of tires or a fresh detail helps presentation but rarely changes the underlying value much. Aftermarket wheels, stereos, and cosmetic modifications usually do not add value and occasionally reduce it, because they narrow the pool of buyers. Sentimental history, unfortunately, counts for nothing at all.

How to work out your own number in ten minutes

Start by writing down the year, make, model, trim, and exact mileage. Trim matters more than most people realize, so check the registration or the door jamb rather than guessing. Then pull your service records together, note anything that needs attention, and run a history report so there are no surprises later.

Next, look at what comparable cars in your area are actually selling for, not what they are listed at. Listing prices are asking prices and often sit well above what changes hands. Finally, get at least one real written offer so you have a concrete figure to measure everything else against. Getting a written offer takes about a minute and carries no obligation.

Trade-in, private sale, or direct buyer

Each route trades money against effort and risk. A private sale can produce the strongest figure, but you carry the listing, the strangers, the test drives, and the payment risk yourself. We covered that path in detail in how to sell a car privately.

A trade-in is the least effort, but the figure is folded into a larger transaction, which makes it hard to evaluate on its own. In Massachusetts a trade also reduces the sales tax on your next car, which can quietly make a lower trade offer competitive. That calculation is worth understanding before you decide, and we walked through it in trade in or sell your car. In New Hampshire, where there is no sales tax, that advantage does not exist at all.

A direct buyer sits between the two. You get a standalone written figure without a listing, without strangers at your door, and without tying the sale to buying something else.

Special cases that change the process

If you still owe money on the car, the lender holds the title and the loan payoff comes out of the sale. That is routine, and we explained the mechanics in how to sell a financed car. If the car is leased, the buyout figure from the leasing company sets the floor, which we covered in selling a leased car. And if the title is missing, that is fixable before you sell, as set out in selling a car without a title.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the online estimate higher than the offers I am getting?

Estimators work from averages and cannot inspect the car. They also often show private-party figures, which assume you do all the work of finding a buyer yourself. A written offer accounts for the actual condition of your specific vehicle.

Does a valuation cost anything?

It should not. Ours does not, and there is no obligation attached to it either way.

Will the offer change when someone sees the car?

It should not, provided the description was accurate. We inspect in person before finalizing, which is precisely so the written figure holds rather than moving at pickup.

Does a high odometer reading mean my car is worth very little?

No. A well-maintained high-mileage car with a clean history is frequently worth more than a lower-mileage car that has been ignored. Condition and records carry more weight than the number alone.

Condition drives the number, and in Massachusetts condition has an official scoreboard: the inspection sticker. A car that would pass the state inspection today is worth more than the same car that would not, and every buyer prices that in.

A well-kept premium car often surprises its owner at valuation time. If yours is a luxury make, our luxury car buying page explains what moves the number on those brands.
