Autotrader can help Boston owners advertise a car to private buyers. Before choosing it, compare the listing cost, transaction fees, time spent arranging viewings and the amount you would actually receive. A marketplace listing and a direct purchase offer are different things.
This guide focuses on a good-condition car you own and want to sell. It explains the questions to ask before listing, then shows how to compare a local buyer without assuming either route will pay more.
Autotrader listing or direct buyer: choose your route
The current Autotrader selling page presents Private Seller Exchange, including listings, buyer communication and transaction support. A public asking price is still your invitation to buyers; it is not proof that someone will pay that amount.
A direct buyer reviews your particular car and makes an offer under its own process. At Boston Car Buyers, a written offer follows inspection. Our online enquiry page explains that starting point.
| Question | Marketplace listing | Local buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Who finds the purchaser? | You advertise and respond to interest | You contact the business directly |
| What does the first number mean? | An asking price | An estimate or offer under stated conditions |
| What costs should you check? | Listing and transaction fees | Any deductions or collection charges |
| What takes your time? | Photos, messages and buyer appointments | Vehicle review, inspection and paperwork |
| What should be agreed? | Price, payment and transfer process | Written purchase terms and handover |
Check Autotrader fees before setting your asking price
At our October 20, 2026 check, Autotrader displayed listing fees of $9, $29 or $49 based on asking price. It also listed a separate Private Seller Exchange seller protection fee of 0.99% of the final sale price, with a $99 minimum. Recheck the live terms before paying.
Put both charges into your comparison. A higher advertised price can still produce a smaller difference after costs. Keep any transport or preparation expense separate so it does not disappear from the calculation.
Compare net proceeds, not just headline prices
Write down your expected selling price, confirmed fees and remaining loan balance. Then compare the result with an inspected written offer. Mark uncertain amounts clearly rather than assuming the most favorable outcome.
Our car value guide explains why retail asking prices, private-sale estimates and purchase offers should not be mixed together.
Prepare your Autotrader ad with useful vehicle details
Autotrader’s advertising checklist asks sellers for vehicle details, equipment, a description and photos. Build your own accurate record before you start filling in the listing.
- Confirm the year, model, trim and current mileage.
- List service records, included keys and useful equipment.
- Describe known repairs, damage and mechanical concerns.
- Take daylight photos of the exterior, cabin and visible wear.
- Remove personal papers from the cabin before photographing it.
Keep the same description when requesting other offers. Changing the mileage or omitting a repair makes the numbers harder to compare. Our online car-selling guide covers the broader preparation process.
Understand Autotrader eligibility and the handover
Autotrader’s current FAQ says Private Seller Exchange cannot facilitate leased vehicles, although it supports eligible financed sales. It also describes vehicle and title restrictions. Check your exact situation with the platform before buying an ad or accepting a buyer’s proposal.
Decide where a viewing could safely take place. For a Boston or Cambridge resident with restricted parking, arrange permission and access before promising a test drive. Leave time to verify the buyer and review the transaction steps.
Keep Autotrader messages and transaction instructions in the official service. If someone sends a payment link or claims a fee is needed elsewhere, independently verify the request before proceeding.
Do not refund an alleged overpayment
The FTC warns car sellers about fake checks that appear in an account before the bank discovers the fraud. Do not send money back to someone who claims to have overpaid. Ask your bank about payment verification before releasing the vehicle.
FAQ: Autotrader for Boston car sellers
How much does Autotrader charge to sell a car?
Check the current listing fee and the separate Private Seller Exchange transaction fee. Both affect your net proceeds; the live page controls the applicable terms.
Does an Autotrader listing guarantee a buyer?
No. Treat the asking price as an advertised price. Buyer interest, inspection, agreement and payment still have to follow.
Can I sell a leased car through Private Seller Exchange?
Its current FAQ says leased vehicles are not supported for that transaction service. Ask your lessor about purchase options before planning a different sale.
Should I compare Autotrader with a local offer?
Yes. Compare expected net proceeds, time, inspection conditions and payment arrangements. Neither route guarantees the highest result for every car.
Compare a Boston-area offer before listing
If Autotrader is one option you are considering, you can also request a review from our Cambridge car-buying team. We buy good-condition vehicles and arrange an inspection before making a written offer.
Send your vehicle details to compare the next step. There is no obligation to accept. Completed purchases are paid by business check or certified bank check at handover.
